Rock-a-Bum's Response

Many of you have seen this article all over the news about families not being able to buy diapers, so they go to such lengths as leaving the diapers on the child for longer, and even "cleaning out" and reusing their disposable diapers.  If you haven't read the article, I truly suggest you do.  It broke my heart, and made me sick to my stomach to think of all the health complications that can arise from these situations.  The article continued on to discuss the emotional toll that this can take on the parents and how there aren't any government funded programs to help families who need diapers.  The one MAJOR thing the article was lacking was a solution....so that is where we come in.

Welcome to

Where you can see how simple it is to build a cloth diaper stash with ONLY enough money for disposables.

Check out our visual that demonstrates just how simple it is to convert to cloth:

Now, let's go over some figures on how you can purchase cloth while you are 100% disposable diapering.  If you only had JUST enough money to buy disposable diapers, I will break down how it would work to switch over to cloth.

Let's say you do 10 diaper changes a day, on average, (this would be for a child who was maybe 9 months or up) and you usually buy a package of Huggies with 160 diapers (example above).  This package would allow you to go just over two weeks (16 days) worth of diapering for your baby.  If you purchase two packs of Rock-a-Bums (2 covers and 4 inserts) and a two packs of flour sack towels (10 towels total) you will have enough diapers for 14 changes (if you use it as an All-in-Two system, which is the most cost effective way).  14 (cloth) changes does not equal 160 (disposable) changes, HOWEVER, you can then WASH and REUSE your system every day until the 16 days (how long you would have had disposables) is up.  Once you would regularly buy disposables again, you put that money into investing in MORE cloth (even the same as above: two covers, four inserts and 10 flour sack towels) and crazy enough, you have enough diapers to wash every other day.  Are you down with washing every other day? If so, guess what, no more money is needed to invest in cloth diapers....you can take the rest of your money (if you disposable diapered until your 9 month old was 2 1/2 that would equal $1,883.12) and use it elsewhere because you don't need more diapers!

This doesn't even include the savings of starting at the newborn stage, or what you will be saving using these as swim diapers!!

So, the question remains, can you jump on the cloth wagon without having to invest a ton in the beginning, and the answer is YES, you can! You might be washing a lot in the beginning but you can do it.  Also, I think washing diapers is totally worth the $1,883.12, don't you?

Now, if only the major news outlets would use THIS kind of an article to teach EVERYONE about using cloth.  So, let's get the word out, and share, share share this information! You could be keeping a child out of a REUSED DISPOSABLE diaper!

So, in keeping with our weekly giveaways, we would like to give away not one, but TWO Rock-a-Bums covers and FOUR Rock-a-Bums inserts! This should give anyone the ability to amp up their stash, or start building a stash!

Camping with Cloth

I warned many of you on Facebook and Twitter that we were planning on camping in cloth this last weekend, and I'm sure many of you were wondering how my experience went.....

So, here are the facts:
  • Our campground had no running water (other than the river).
  • I packed 10 covers and 40 inserts (we use our RAB mainly as an All-in-Two).  We used 8 covers and 28 inserts
  • I packed 4 wet bags, but we ended up only using 2!
  • I packed my full wipes warmer and used about 40 wipes, because we used them to clean her tush and her little body

And here is the outcome:
My motto for the weekend was "let it be" (no, not the whole Beatles song, just the line) ;).  We were camping in DIRT, and I have a 15 month old TODDLER, who thinks dirt is quite amusing.  She rolled in it, played in it, and even ATE it, yes, I did say she ingested some of it, and you know what, she survived.  We bathed her in the river, fed her at a picnic table, and changed her outside, and she enjoyed every minute of it!

Never looking at the camera!
Now, I know you're all wondering if I survived...well....I will tell you that I had to repeat my weekend motto many times in my head, but we made it through, even in our cloth diapers.  There were times (where she was sitting in mashed up blackberries) that I thought, "man, disposables would be easier," but I'm actually really glad we did it!  I didn't have to buy a single disposable diaper for our entire trip AND I didn't have to add to the MOUNDS of garbage already accumulating at the campground.  Overall, I think it was quite successful and we I had the opportunity to show off our rockin' style and I even converted a few along the way (even some non-preggers ladies)!  At the beginning of the trip, they thought I was crazy for camping in cloth,  (I kinda did too) but by the end I had them all changing diapers for me (see what I did there) ;).  It was surprisingly easier than I thought it was going to be, which is a major bonus!
Crusin in her Rock-a-Bums

My only tip: have a plan of action for poop! We just plopped them into a Ziplock bag, and then threw it away at the end~

*In case your wondering, the blackberries came out of the diaper with ease! Hmm.....getting stains out of covers....I'm sensing another blog post......

Why we ROCK

We aren't biased or anything....well....ok, maybe a little...but we think our diapers ROCK! One main reason we think that, is because of the versatility! Want a pocket diaper? DONE.  Want a hybrid diaper? DONE. Want something quick and easy like a cover over a disposable to prevent blowouts? DONE! Want an all-in-one or all-in-two? DONE and DONE!  You can change how you use your Rock-a-Bums as often as your mood changes, (yes, this even includes those of you with pregnancy hormones)!  We can't even begin to explain to you how awesome this diaper is....so.....let's see it strut it's stuff in a video!

*disclaimer - our diaper does not actually walk, but trust me, if we could have done it, we would have ;)

So, rockstars, what's it going to be? All-in-one, all-in-two, Pocket, hybrid, or cover?  Well, good thing you can rotate between all of them in a day, I know I certainly do!

Diaper Ditchers

You hear a faint ripping sound....you come around the corner and expect your child to have a piece of paper or something similar in their mouth...but what you come upon is much different.  In the .00000005 seconds it took you to round the corner, your child has ditched their diaper, taken a few steps, squatted and peed all over your carpet (true story)....sighhhhhhhhh.......that's what we call Diaper Ditching....it ranks pretty high on the list of fears of diapering moms.  At least mine anyway.

So, when my sweet daughter first started ripping at her diapers, I kept thinking, I just need to distract her, and then she won't remember she's wearing Velcro.  That didn't work.

Then I thought, oh, I'll just keep her in pants all the time.  Well, it's 90 degrees here, so, that didn't work.

At this point, I was noticing that only our snap diapers would stay on her...so I thought I could sneak the Velcro in during nap time.  She woke up from one nap drenched in her pee with no diaper on, and SCREAMING, so that didn't work.

Apparently my sweet little one just loved the sound the Velcro made WAY too much...so, we are now a 100% snap family :) No more Velcro for this little girl! We will tuck them away for the next one!  LUCKILY, we love the Rock-a-Bum snaps and they are strong enough to ward off her little 15 month old mischievous ways :)

**If you are a disposable only family, the Rock-a-Bums covers are designed to go over disposables too, and it will keep your little one from ditching their disposable diaper!

This is my little girl attempting to take off the Rock-A-Bums, thank goodness the snaps are strong!

Here's the best part,  you can enter to win your OWN Rock-a-Bums cover, insert and wet bag! Fill out the rafflecopter to participate!
